The project started when I received leftover pieces of wood from MASTERWAL for my university.

The main theme of the research is to adapt humans to the wood's convenience. It is an exploration of what design can do to achieve this. It began with the questioning of the notion that leftover wood is useless and unwanted, and that it is merely for human convenience.

To begin with, trees were not born to be used by humans, so the moment they become materials for human use, they deviate from the ecological cycle. This one requires people to be part of the cycle by systematically planting trees and by not using trees faster than they can grow.

I worked on this project because I thought my research theme “ Relations between a tool and a person” could help if it was not about the consumption of timber in the first place, but about the leftovers.

The interesting thing about this exploration is that it is not an exploration to eliminate the word '端材( Hazai)' that means leftover material by utilising every single material, but a design exploration to make use of the word '端材( Hazai)'  precisely because it exists. 

'端材( Hazai)'  is a word created for humans’ convenience.

With this in mind, I wanted to make this research about the importance of people living in harmony with nature.

このプロジェクトは、MASTERWALの端材を大学に頂いた所からスタートしました。

研究の大きなテーマは、木材の都合に人間が合わせること。そのためにデザインができることの探究です。 それは、木の端材は使い道がなく不要になること、そして使い道が無く不要になったのは単に人間の都合であることへの問いからスタートしています。

そもそもの話をすると、木は人が使う材料になるために生まれた訳ではないので、人が使う材料になった瞬間に生態系の循環から逸脱してしまいます。こちらは、計画的に植林すること、木が育つ以上のスピードで消費しないことで、人も循環の一部に組することが求められます。

そもそもの話ではなく端材のことなら、私の研究テーマ“道具と人の関係性”でも役に立てると思い、プロジェクトに臨みました。

この探究の面白さは、材料をことごとく活用して 端材という言葉を無くすための探究ではなく、端材という言葉があるからこそ、それを活かすデザインの探究という点です。

端材は人間の都合で作られた言葉です。

その意味も含めて、人に自然と共生する事の大切さを知ってもらう研究にしたいと思いました。
