Collaboration course with Prof.Christiane Sauer
Collaboration course with Prof.Christiane Sauer
Kyoto, Japan 2025
I taught a course for undergraduate and graduate students at Kyoto University of the Arts together with Professor Christiane Sauer from the Weißensee Academy of Art Berlin.
Christiane specialises in researching the fields of textiles and architecture, and her work is truly fascinating. → LINK
Taking 'Entanglement' — a key concept in her research — as the theme of the coursee, we ran a two-week workshop-style course that also incorporated elements of my own research on the relationship between tools and people.
On the first day, students are asked to bring two materials that they think demonstrate entanglement, and two that they think do not. They then reclassify the materials, explaining why each one does (or does not) demonstrate entanglement.
Next, they use the classified materials to create a new tool. At a later date, they take this tool to the Kamogawa River to use it and make new discoveries about nature. They then share the insights gained with the class before proceeding with their individual final projects.
Planning and then jointly delivering the course was an incredibly enriching experience that I cherish deeply. As I cannot design a course without understanding my collaborator’s research, I study her work. In doing so, I gain new insights. The reverse is also true: when she understands my research and we discuss it, I sometimes discover new interpretations.
The classes with Christiane sparked my curiosity and I learnt a lot from her personality as well.
I am truly grateful for the opportunity to teach alongside her.
