--From the text of the exhibition introduction--
My research on tool design moves between three main themes. This exhibition showcases the results of my work, which centers on the relationship between tools and people.
The fundamental questions underlying this research are: "Why do we use tools? What kind of tools should we create?" To explore the diverse relationships that can exist between a tool and a person, I have conducted experiments from various perspectives.
Tools are indispensable to our daily lives. Consequently, tools significantly influence people and shape how we live. For instance, a tool's functions can sometimes negate a person's abilities. Therefore, users are asked to consider what kind of tools they will live with, and creators are asked to consider what kind of tools they will make.
Based on the earlier mentioned fundamental question, I prioritize the idea of tools designed to help people by leveraging their "good qualities." The goal is to transform our living environments into places that draw out and utilize the inherent goodness within humans. People can nurture the goodness they naturally possess in their daily lives. This perspective suggests that society, as a community of individuals, will gradually progress in a positive direction.
The origins of tools date back 2.5 million years. Initially, tools were created to help humans survive in a harsh world. They subsequently evolved to offer convenience, and through their sale as products, they became central to capitalism. The latest tools at our disposal today are AI and smartphones. They are both extremely convenient, and I use them frequently.
However, my research interests do not lie in convenience. I am interested in connecting the aforementioned "good qualities" with tools.
There is much I do not yet understand, so I am proceeding by trial and error. By the time I finish my research, I hope to have found tools that help us remember that we are alive and tools that help us appreciate the fact that we are alive.
Throughout history, humans have created tools, and tools have reshaped humans.
Tools are full of potential. I hope this exhibition will provide an opportunity for us to reflect on why we use them.
