--From the text of the exhibition introduction--

One of my ongoing research projects is to explore new relationships between a tool and a person. This is because I have doubts about the fact that a tool that was born with a certain purpose has always had the same relationship with a person as time goes by. As society and people's lives change over time, the role of tools is able to be redefined.

Tools that we have used for a long time have their own history and development. Designs that utilize them will bring familiarity and freshness not found in the creation of new tools, as well as a deeper story behind the tools to our daily lives.

The result of such redefinition sometimes contributes to preserving our humanity and has the power to move society in a positive direction. I believe that the universality that comes from utilizing the premise that a tool has, and the creativity that comes from overturning that premise, are the source of such power.

The theme of this exhibition is a new relationship between boxes and people.

A box can be defined as the simplest form to create a new space by dividing a certain space.

Boxes are used not only for packaging, but also for houses, rooms, and storage tools, and there is no end to the list of tools that make use of the box shape, such as vehicles and home appliances. These boxes are not often perceived as part of our daily lives, but they have always existed as necessities.

Besides the universality of their existence, the difficulty of this theme is that a box is defined by its shape. While struggling with the students about these issues, I think I was able to hand over my research methodology to them.

We hope you will enjoy the results of our research, which has been searching for a new relationship between tools and people.

私が続けている研究の一つに、 道具と人との新しい関係性を探ることがあります。ある目的を持って生まれた道具が、 時代が変遷する中でずっと同じ関係性を人と結んでいる事に疑問があるからです。 時間の経過と共に社会の在り方や人々の生活も変わっていく 中で、 道具の役割も再定義ができます。

私たちが長い時間使い続けてきた道具には、 その道具が持つ歴史や発達の経緯があります。 それを活かすデザインは、 新しい道具をつくることにはない親しみと新鮮さ、 そして道具の背景にある深い物語性を暮らしにもたらします。

そうして生まれた再定義の結果は、 時に私たちの人間性を保つことに寄与し、 社会を良い方向へ動かしてくれる力を持ちます。 道具が備えている前提を活かすことで生まれる普遍性と、 前提を覆すことで生まれる創造性が、 そういった力の源のように思います。

今回のテーマは、 箱と人との新しい関係性です。

箱は、 ある空間を区切ることで新たな空間を生む、 最も簡単な形と定義できます。

パッケージはもちろん家や部屋も箱、 収納用の道具は大体箱ですし、 箱型を活かした道具となると乗り物や家電などここで紹介しきれません。 これら箱は、 日常的には意識され難い存在ですが、 ずっと暮らしの必需品として存在しています。

その存在の普遍性以外に、 箱は形状で定義されている点がこのテー マの難点です。 そこは学生達と苦悶しつつ、 研究手法を彼らに手渡せたのだと思います。

道具と人との新しい関係性を探し続けたデザインの成果、 ご高覧頂ければ幸いです。
